QCE subject revision
QCE Physical Education revision from real past papers
The Physical Education external exam is applied sports science: energy systems, training principles and periodisation, tested through data and scenarios rather than straight recall. Real QCAA past papers are broken down question by question and put into a daily revision loop.
No card required, no auto-charge.
What's in the QCE Physical Education external exam?
| Paper | Format | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| One paper — combination response | Section 1: 10 multiple choice (10 marks). Section 2: 3 short-response questions (roughly 28 marks). Section 3: one extended response of 400 words or more (roughly 16–20 marks). | Perusal 5 minutes, working time 120 minutes. No calculator or formula sheet; responses in full sentences. |
- The external examination contributes 25% of your final subject result.
- One paper, sat in the end-of-year external assessment block.
- Multiple choice, short response and an extended response in a single paper.
- The extended response is marked against criteria — applying training concepts to the given data or scenario, not reciting them.
The authoritative source on exam structure is always the current QCAA syllabus and assessment specifications — check them for the fine print, and treat this page as a practical summary.
Which past papers are in the question bank?
The QCAA publishes each year's external assessment papers and marking guides. The question bank is built from the 2021–2025 papers, broken down question by question and mapped to the current syllabus subject matter, so out-of-scope items from the superseded syllabus are not scheduled.

Explain why a 400 m sprinter relies mainly on the anaerobic glycolysis (lactic acid) system. Refer to the duration and intensity of the event.
Show the worked answer
- A 400 m sprint lasts roughly 45–55 seconds at near-maximal intensity (1 mark).
- The ATP–PC system is largely exhausted after about 10 seconds, and the aerobic system cannot resupply ATP quickly enough for this intensity (1 mark).
- Anaerobic glycolysis breaks down glucose without oxygen to produce ATP rapidly for the remaining time, at the cost of accumulating lactate and hydrogen ions (1 mark).
An original question written in the style of the QCE Physical Education external assessment, not a QCAA item. In the app, real past-paper questions unfold the same way: you attempt first, then reveal the marking points one at a time and self-mark.
The verbs that carry the marks in Physical Education
Read the verb before the content. Across the 2021–2025 QCAA papers, 89% of short-response and extended items open with one of the QCAA’s cognitive verbs, and in Physical Education the marks cluster around a handful of them. “explain” alone heads 7 items. The verb sets the shape of the answer; the marks beside it set the depth.
| Verb | Items 2021–25 | Usually worth |
|---|---|---|
| Explain | 7 | 6–9 marks |
| Identify | 7 | 3–5 marks |
| Justify | 5 | 6–12 marks |
In the app, every real Physical Education question shows its verb as a chip, with what the verb asks for, the moves a full answer makes and the marks it usually carries a tap away. The same verbs come back as cards in your daily session, frame the checklist when you self-mark, and can be tagged as “misread the verb” when marks go missing. What each verb means, in plain words, is in the QCE cognitive verbs guide.
Counts are items in the published QCAA external assessment papers 2021–2025 whose stem opens with the verb (multiple choice excluded); “usually worth” is the marks range covering most of those items. Verb meanings in the app and the guide are Captivate’s paraphrases of the QCAA cognitive verb framework, not the QCAA’s wording.
Topics covered

How does Physical Education revision work here?
Physical Education runs on a precise vocabulary — thresholds, zones, phases, ratios — that the exam expects you to apply to a scenario, not just define. Flashcards keep the terminology producible under spaced repetition, past-exam questions train the application against real data, and the gap log tags whether marks were lost on the concept or on connecting it to the stimulus.
Each day the app composes one finishable session — quick recall, then the reviews your memory is about to drop (scheduled by FSRS spaced repetition), then past-exam questions on your weakest Physical Education knowledge points. Sit full papers under exam conditions when you're ready, and read your readiness forecast as a compass, not a promise. Add an internal assessment (IA1, IA2, IA3) with its date and scope and the plan aims at that instead, from per-point revision packs rather than past papers; when you're stuck, a tutor answers only from the Physical Education syllabus and names the point it used — see the assessment task guide and the tutor guide. The first-week guide, timed sits guide and readiness guide show each step on the live app. The technique itself is free: our evidence-based revision guide and spaced repetition explainer cover it with citations.

Common questions
Which Physical Education papers are included?
Questions are drawn from official QCAA Physical Education external assessment papers, broken down question by question and mapped to the syllabus subject matter. Inside the app you can also regroup them and sit a paper as one timed piece.
Is the extended response included?
Yes — past extended-response tasks sit alongside the multiple choice and short response. Write in the app or photograph handwritten pages via a QR code, then self-mark against the examiner-style marking guidance.
Does the external exam cover Unit 3?
No. Every external assessment from 2021 to 2025 has drawn all of its marks from Unit 4 — energy, fitness and training. Unit 3 is assessed internally. The bank reflects that: your daily loop for Physical Education is built from Unit 4 subject matter, and the readiness forecast weights it accordingly.
