QCE subject revision
QCE Mathematical Methods revision from real past papers
Mathematical Methods is where calculus meets statistics, and the external exam tests both under two very different conditions: one paper with no calculator at all, one built around technology. Real QCAA past papers are broken down question by question and put into a daily revision loop.
No card required, no auto-charge.
What's in the QCE Mathematical Methods external exam?
| Paper | Format | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 — Technology-free | Section 1: 10 multiple choice (10 marks). Section 2: 9 short-response questions (45 marks). Exact values and by-hand working. | Perusal 5 minutes, working time 90 minutes. No calculator. QCAA formula book provided. |
| Paper 2 — Technology-active | Section 1: 10 multiple choice (10 marks). Section 2: 9 short-response questions (45 marks). Expects graphics-calculator use: decimals, inverse normal, numerical solving. | Perusal 5 minutes, working time 90 minutes. QCAA-approved graphics calculator (no CAS). QCAA formula book provided. |
- The external examination contributes 50% of your final subject result.
- Two papers: Paper 1 is technology-free, Paper 2 is technology-active.
- Each paper includes multiple choice and short response.
- Questions span simple familiar through to complex unfamiliar — the top marks live in applying methods to contexts you haven't rehearsed.
The authoritative source on exam structure is always the current QCAA syllabus and assessment specifications — check them for the fine print, and treat this page as a practical summary.
Which past papers are in the question bank?
The QCAA publishes each year's external assessment papers and marking guides. The question bank is built from the 2021–2025 papers, broken down question by question and mapped to the current syllabus subject matter, so out-of-scope items from the superseded syllabus are not scheduled. Each question is badged technology-free or technology-active so you sit each paper with the right tools.
Try a question in the exam style
Paper 1 (technology-free) short response, differentiation
4 marks
Let f(x) = x e²ˣ. Find f′(x) and hence the x-coordinate of the stationary point of f.
Show the worked answer
- Product rule: f′(x) = e²ˣ + x · 2e²ˣ (1 mark).
- Factorise: f′(x) = e²ˣ(1 + 2x) (1 mark).
- Stationary point where f′(x) = 0; e²ˣ > 0 for all x, so 1 + 2x = 0 (1 mark).
- x = −½ (1 mark).
An original question written in the style of the QCE Mathematical Methods external assessment, not a QCAA item. In the app, real past-paper questions unfold the same way: you attempt first, then reveal the marking points one at a time and self-mark.
The verbs that carry the marks in Mathematical Methods
Read the verb before the content. Across the 2021–2025 QCAA papers, 89% of short-response and extended items open with one of the QCAA’s cognitive verbs, and in Mathematical Methods the marks cluster around a handful of them. “determine” alone heads 115 items. The verb sets the shape of the answer; the marks beside it set the depth.
| Verb | Items 2021–25 | Usually worth |
|---|---|---|
| Determine | 115 | 1–4 marks |
| Evaluate | 9 | 2–6 marks |
| Calculate | 6 | 1–3 marks |
| Express | 5 | 2–4 marks |
| State | 5 | 2–4 marks |
In the app, every real Mathematical Methods question shows its verb as a chip, with what the verb asks for, the moves a full answer makes and the marks it usually carries a tap away. The same verbs come back as cards in your daily session, frame the checklist when you self-mark, and can be tagged as “misread the verb” when marks go missing. What each verb means, in plain words, is in the QCE cognitive verbs guide.
Counts are items in the published QCAA external assessment papers 2021–2025 whose stem opens with the verb (multiple choice excluded); “usually worth” is the marks range covering most of those items. Verb meanings in the app and the guide are Captivate’s paraphrases of the QCAA cognitive verb framework, not the QCAA’s wording.
Topics covered
- Further differentiation, including exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions

Coverage is mapped to the QCAA syllabus at subject-matter level, and the heatmap in the app shows exactly which points you've practised.
How does Mathematical Methods revision work here?
Maths revision lives or dies on working, not recognition. Multi-mark solutions unfold step by step so you say the next move before seeing it, you can photograph handwritten working from paper via a QR code, and the gap log tags why marks were lost — didn't know it, misread, wrong working, careless slip. Practising Paper 1 questions with the calculator physically out of reach is the single habit that pays off most.
Each day the app composes one finishable session — quick recall, then the reviews your memory is about to drop (scheduled by FSRS spaced repetition), then past-exam questions on your weakest Mathematical Methods knowledge points. Sit full papers under exam conditions when you're ready, and read your readiness forecast as a compass, not a promise. Add an internal assessment (IA1, IA2, IA3) with its date and scope and the plan aims at that instead, from per-point revision packs rather than past papers; when you're stuck, a tutor answers only from the Mathematical Methods syllabus and names the point it used — see the assessment task guide and the tutor guide. The first-week guide, timed sits guide and readiness guide show each step on the live app. The technique itself is free: our evidence-based revision guide and spaced repetition explainer cover it with citations.

Common questions
Which Mathematical Methods papers are included?
Questions are drawn from official QCAA Mathematical Methods external assessment papers, broken down question by question and mapped to the syllabus subject matter. Inside the app you can also regroup them and sit a paper as one timed piece.
How do timed sits work with two papers?
Each paper is sat as its own timed piece, with reading time, writing time and deferred marking — so a Paper 1 sit runs under technology-free conditions and a Paper 2 sit with your calculator, just like exam day. You can also build shorter custom papers by topic.
How do the technology-free and technology-active papers differ?
Paper 1 bans calculators, so every question resolves to exact values or clean arithmetic — the skill is algebra and calculus by hand. Paper 2 assumes a graphics calculator and asks for decimals, inverse-normal values and numerical solutions. The bank badges every question by paper, and timed sits let you run each paper under its own conditions.
