QCE subject revision
QCE Business revision from real past papers
The Business external exam hands you an unseen case study and expects analysis, not recall: applying change-management models, weighing strategies and writing to criteria under time pressure. Real QCAA past papers are broken down question by question and put into a daily revision loop.
No card required, no auto-charge.
What's in the QCE Business external exam?
| Paper | Format | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| One paper — combination response | Section 1: 3–4 short-response questions (roughly 15–20 marks), escalating from a theory item to an analytical-tool item such as a force field analysis. Section 2: one extended response of 400–600 words (roughly 20–25 marks) — a business report on a case study delivered in a separate stimulus book. | Planning time 15 minutes, working time 120 minutes. No calculator or notes; written in full sentences. |
- The external examination contributes 25% of your final subject result.
- One paper with a separate case-study stimulus book, sat in the end-of-year external assessment block.
- Short-response items plus an extended response, both anchored to the unseen stimulus.
- The extended response is marked against criteria — structure, business terminology and use of the stimulus matter as much as content knowledge.
The authoritative source on exam structure is always the current QCAA syllabus and assessment specifications — check them for the fine print, and treat this page as a practical summary.
Which past papers are in the question bank?
The QCAA publishes each year's external assessment papers and marking guides. The question bank is built from the 2021–2025 papers, broken down question by question and mapped to the current syllabus subject matter, so out-of-scope items from the superseded syllabus are not scheduled.

Section 1 short response, drivers of change
3 marks
Define change management, and explain one external driver of change using an example.
Show the worked answer
- Change management is the structured process of planning, implementing and embedding change in a business so that its people, processes and culture adjust to it (1 mark).
- An external driver is a factor outside the business that forces it to change — for example, a competitor launching a cheaper online alternative (1 mark).
- Explanation: the new competitor reduces sales, so the business must transform its own model, for example by adding an online channel, to remain viable (1 mark).
An original question written in the style of the QCE Business external assessment, not a QCAA item. In the app, real past-paper questions unfold the same way: you attempt first, then reveal the marking points one at a time and self-mark.
Topics covered
- Drivers of change and the post-maturity stage of the business life cycle
- Repositioning a business, including situational analysis tools such as SWOT and force field analysis
- Change management models, including Lewin's and Kotter's
- Leading and managing change, including management styles and overcoming resistance
- Transforming a business and evaluating strategies
Coverage is mapped to the QCAA syllabus at subject-matter level, and the heatmap in the app shows exactly which points you've practised.
How does Business revision work here?
In Business, knowing the models isn't the hard part — applying them to a case study you've never seen is. Practising against real past stimulus material trains that transfer: the stimulus stays beside the question while you work, you self-mark against the examiner's marking points, and you tag whether marks were lost on the theory, the application or the command term, so the next session targets it.
Each day the app composes one finishable session — quick recall, then the reviews your memory is about to drop (scheduled by FSRS spaced repetition), then past-exam questions on your weakest Business knowledge points. Sit full papers under exam conditions when you're ready, and read your readiness forecast as a compass, not a promise. Add an internal assessment (IA1, IA2, IA3) with its date and scope and the plan aims at that instead, from per-point revision packs rather than past papers; when you're stuck, a tutor answers only from the Business syllabus and names the point it used — see the assessment task guide and the tutor guide. The first-week guide, timed sits guide and readiness guide show each step on the live app. The technique itself is free: our evidence-based revision guide and spaced repetition explainer cover it with citations.

Common questions
Which Business papers are included?
Questions are drawn from official QCAA Business external assessment papers, broken down question by question and mapped to the syllabus subject matter. Inside the app you can also regroup them and sit a paper as one timed piece.
Does it cover the extended response?
Yes — past extended-response tasks are included with their case-study stimulus and examiner-style marking guidance. Write in the app or photograph handwritten pages via a QR code, then self-mark against the marking guide.
How do I practise the 400–600 word business report?
Sit a past Section 2 task under exam conditions with the stimulus book beside you, write the report in the app or photograph handwritten pages, then mark yourself against the published criteria for that year. The app's timed sits enforce planning and working time so you learn to budget the report inside 120 minutes rather than discovering the limit on the day.
